DKP System Explained

What is DKP?
DKP or Dragon Kill Points are a loot distribution system invented by the Afterlife guild in Everquest. It's primary use is to have a fairer loot distribution system towards people's time investment into the guild and particularly the events that require a lot of people's participation to succeed. More concrete, everyone can earn DKP points by taking parts in raids and killing bosses. This DKP points are then used to buy epic drops from the raid bosses.

Earning DKP
The following actions can increase your amount of DKP:
  • Being in the Meeting Point at the time a raid leaves for a planned event earns you 5 DKP for being On Time.
  • For each raid you receive a fixed amount of DKP if you stay until raid call (typically 23.00 server time). The DKP awarded scales with the difficulty of the raid target.
DKP Bidding
When an epic item drop, the DKP Master will announce the following:
  • The minimum DKP value for the item.
  • The current DKP value of the persons allowed to bid.
From this point on we use an open DKP bidding system, everyone can take turn to increase the current bid, with increments of at least 5 DKP (10 DKP increments once we get to 100 DKP). If no new bid has been done for at least 10 seconds, the bidding master will one last time ask for new bids, and if no bids come in, the last bid is considered the winning bid. The DKP will be substracted from that characters total DKP and he will be allowed to loot the item. Raid chat should be left clear during the bidding process so we clearly see who bidded what. Should you have a lagspike or disconnect and are still interested in bidding, announcing on teamspeak will let the bidding master wait for you.

Special Case
  • If none of those interested in a certain item have enough DKP to bid at least the minimum bid, the item will be given to the one with the highest DKP. If more than one person has the same amount of DKP, a /random will decide who wins the item. The minimum DKP value will be subtracted from the user's DKP, resulting in a negative DKP value.
  • In some cases the officers of the guilds may decide to favor one person for a specific item and let him buy it for the minimum DKP. An example of this case would be one of the legendary bindings of Thundaraan drops and a person already has the other binding.
  • If noone is interested in bidding, the item will be placed in the guild bank if it is a Bind On Equip item, and will be disenchanted if it is Bind on Pickup. The guild officers may decide what will happen with those items.
Bid! Bid! Bid!
It is not because someone has more DKP than you that it is useless to bid against them! This might need some adaptation for people that are used to null-based DKP systems, but it is not because someone has 1000 DKP that he is willing to spend it all on one drop! On the other hand, even if he would be willing to spend it all, you have at least put a serious dent in his currency, raising the chances you can outbid him on the next drop ;)
Know your DKP
The easiest way to know your DKP value is by looking at the DKP site. Here you can consult everyone's DKP values, attendance ratio and the items they have won.
